Astronomer Percival Lowell studied Mars extensively with the great reflector telescope at the Arizona Flagstaff Observatory and wrote extensively on arguments for the existence of life on Mars. He sketched the images he perceived and was convinced that he saw canals designed to bring water from the martian polar ice caps to oases and other growing areas.
