Public School Academies

There are 82 public school academies in Wayne County that serve approximately 47,559 students, representing 17% of the county’s 285,087 students. RESA was the first ISD to institute a rigorous continual and annual oversight review process of the PSAs in its region. A comprehensive handbook has been produced and shared with currently authorized charter schools, Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and fellow authorizers throughout the state.

In 1995 RESA became the first ISD in Michigan to authorize, or charter, a public school academy. Casa Richard Academy (formerly known as Ser Casa Academy), was our first, and serves at-risk students who have dropped out or been suspended from traditional high schools. Our six authorized academies include, Blanche Kelso Bruce, Casa Richard, Charlotte Forten, Creative Montessori, Henry Ford and Marilyn F. Lundy.
