The number one reason families do not access health care is because they do not have health insurance. Great strides have been made to increase access to health insurance for residents through the Healthy Michigan Plan and the Health Insurance Marketplace. With these two plans, Michigan has insured over 700,000 people in less than a year. The Healthy Michigan Plan is available to anyone below 133% of federal poverty level, and the Health Insurance Marketplace to those above 133%. The Healthy Michigan Plan is open year-round for new enrollment; however, the Health Insurance Marketplace is only open from November 15, 2014 to February 15, 2015. It is crucial that families know about these opportunities.
Schools that wish to help link families to insurance could provide this information in new school year packets, post in their electronic and paper newsletters to families, and provide both web links on their school's web page.
The websites also have easy-to-understand brochures available which can be included in back-to-school packets. To locate an unbiased navigator to assist, at no cost, in understanding enrollment options within the Health Insurance Marketplace, families can visit www.enrollmichigan.com. If you have questions about how to plan an enrollment event with an unbiased navigator, or any other outreach questions, please contact Robin Turner, School Community Health Alliance of Michigan, at 517-908-0847 , ext. 222 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
