From the Superintendent's Desk
Mr. Pete L. Lazaroff, Jr.

May 1, 2008

Dear Parents:

Yesterday, after we were notified that a second student, from another building, was diagnosed with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureaus, otherwise referred to as MRSA, it was decided that we would disinfect every building in the District beginning on Friday, May 2nd, and continuing on Saturday, May 3rd, and Sunday, May 4th.  Because this is a potentially deadly strain of staph, which can cause skin irritation and severe infections, we have decided to go above and beyond the Wayne County Health Department recommendations for disinfecting the buildings for the safety of our students and staff. We will continually remind staff and students at all buildings to maintain proper hygiene by washing their hands frequently.

Please visit the websites listed below for additional information or if you have a particular question about this issue.  Also, please feel free to call my office with questions or concerns.

Please see the following list of resources provided by the Wayne County Department of Public Health. These resources should provide additional information and help answer any questions that you may have regarding MRSA. If you have any specific questions concerning MRSA, please contact your primary care physician.

MDCH has two educational brochures on prevention of MRSA and can be located as follows:

A MDCH MRSA Prevention and Control Tri-Fold Brochure is available at:
http://www.michigan.gov/documents/MRSA_brochure_FINAL_167898_7.pdf

A MDCH MRSA Prevention and Control Poster is available at:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a website that provides information on prevention and control for both HA-MRSA and CA-MRSA:
http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dhqp/ar_mrsa.html and http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dhqp/ar_mrsa_ca.html

Massachusetts State Health – Schools and MRSA – also has translated materials for MRSA in a variety of languages: http://www.mass.gov/dph/cdc/antibiotic/mrsa_school_health.htm

Sincerely,

Pete L. Lazaroff, Jr.
Superintendent
