From the Superintendent's
Desk October 22, 2007
Dear Parents:
Last week, four students in Oakland County were diagnosed with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, otherwise referred to as MRSA. This is a potentially deadly strain of staph, which can cause skin irritation and severe infections.
I would like to emphasize that we have had no reports of any child in our district or any staff member having this infection. We have been taking precautionary measures. In addition to regular daily cleaning of school, I have directed the custodial staff in taking precautions and extra care in cleaning the bathrooms, locker rooms, drinking fountains and the swimming pool. We are also making sure that the cleaning products we use, as well as, the application of the cleaning products are as effective as possible. In addition to these precautionary measures, we are asking staff at all buildings to remind students to maintain proper hygiene by washing their hands frequently.
Please see the following list of resources provided by the Wayne County Department of Public Health. These resources should provide additional information and help answer any questions that you may have regarding MRSA.
MDCH has two educational brochures on prevention of MRSA and can be located as follows:
MDCH MRSA Prevention and Control Tri-Fold Brochure is available at: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/MRSA_brochure_FINAL_167898_7.pdf
