Beginning School Bus Driver Training

Training is scheduled for 4 days; first, second and third days from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and fourth day from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., unless otherwise indicated. Beginning School Bus Driver classes are now being held at the Wayne County Community College. Location at Conference Room #7, 21000 Northline Road in Taylor (directions to WCCC).

Receipt of Enrollment Cards

Due to the large number of drivers in Wayne County, enrollment cards cannot be processed on a same-day basis. Please allow 2-3 business days to receive enrollment letters and cards in the mail.  Please remember that although districts may enroll drivers in any of these classes, enrollment cards cannot be received until 90 days prior to the class date.

Advanced School Bus Driver Training

Mandated School Bus Driver Continuing Education classes are available on the following dates: Note: Class time is 8:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

COURSE FEE: $20

This is a state-mandated continuing education requirement. All classes are scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (six hours, including breaks) at Wayne RESA. Attendance is required for all six hours in order to successfully complete this class. Lunch will be provided.

(Please Note: Per the State of Michigan Pupil Transportation Public Act 187, Section 257.1851: Every current school bus driver holding a green or yellow education card that expires on Sept. 30, 2019 must attend a six-hour school bus driver continuing education class by that expiration date.)

Drivers who successfully complete this class will be issued a green card that expires September 30 of  2021.

Instructions for Self-Employed Drivers

Although most school bus drivers are enrolled into a beginning bus driver or continuing education class by the school district or contractor for which they work, there are also many drivers who are Self-Employed. A driver is considered to be Self-Employed if he/she falls into one of the following categories:

  • Retired school bus driver
  • School bus driver in between employers (or unemployed)

If you are a self-employed driver and you wish to enroll in our beginning bus driver classes, you must enroll yourself using our online enrollment form (using the link above). (Enrollments CANNOT be taken over the phone.) Additionally, you must mail your course fee ($75 check or money order) to our office in order to receive your enrollment confirmation. (Enrollments WILL NOT be completed or confirmed without the $75 class fee.) Please mail your check or money order to:

If you are a self-employed driver and you have a current yellow or green MDE card, you may enroll yourself in our continuing bus driver class using our online enrollment form (using the link above). (Enrollments CANNOT be taken over the phone.) Additionally, you must mail your course fee ($20 check or money order) to our office in order to receive your enrollment confirmation. (Enrollments WILL NOT be completed or confirmed without the $20 class fee.) Please mail your check or money order to:

Once we receive your completed online enrollment form and your $20 course fee, we will mail a confirmation letter to the address included on your enrollment form.

Transportation Supervisor Training

The Michigan Department of Education has separated Transportation Supervisor training into two three-hour segments. You must complete both segments to be eligible for a Supervisor card. For instructions on how to access the online courses, please email Kim Hooper for instructions.  If you still have questions after receiving the instructions, please call 734.334.1319.

Once Supervisors have completed both segments, and the proper documentation is e-mailed to our office (per the instructions you receive), you will be eligible for a new Transportation Supervisor card, which will have an expiration date of 9/30/2020.  New cards will be mailed to Supervisors after course requirements are completed. Cards cannot be issued after the expiration date.

(*If you have already received your supervisor card with an expiration date of 9/30/2020, you Do Not need to complete courses at this time.*)

Please Note:  Public Act 187 states, "The person or persons in charge of school bus operations at a school shall successfully complete 6 hours of supervisory continuing education every 2 years after the successful completion of the beginning school bus driver training program."  If you have additional questions regarding supervisor training, please contact Kim Hooper at 734.334.1319.
