All 4-year-olds who live in Michigan qualify for high-quality preschool at the Wayne RESA Early Childhood Center at no cost to their family.

We provide the Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) curriculum, Michigan's free PreK program for 4-year-olds that is ranked #1 in the U.S. This is a safe place for children to learn, designed to foster social, emotional, and developmentally appropriate growth for our youngest learners. Math, reading, and thinking skills are taught daily through fun, hands-on activities. Our center partners with families and educators to ensure children are prepared for kindergarten and lifelong learning and success.

Great Start Readiness Program Eligibility:

  • All 4-year-olds who are residents of Michigan
  • Your child may live in a different county than where you enroll
  • Eligible birth dates: Sept. 2, 2021 through Sept. 1, 2022
  • Children who turn 4-years-old between Sept. 2, 2026 and Dec. 1, 2026 can apply now but will be on a waitlist until Sept. 2, 2026
  • GSRP prioritizes enrollment for children with Individualized Education Plans (IEP), children placed in the foster care system, and children experiencing homelessness
  • All income levels are welcome

Our Early Childhood Center Will Offer:

  • Up to four state-of-the-art classrooms
  • Each classroom will enroll up to 20 children
  • A Lead Teacher and Associate Teacher partnership in each classroom
    • A third support staff member as needed
    • Special Education services as needed

Program Features:

  • Five-day programming aligned to the school-year calendar
  • Transportation provided for Inkster residents
  • Home visits conducted twice per year
  • Family engagement activities throughout the year

  • Beautiful, nature-based playground
  • Extended outdoor classroom
  • Bicycle and tricycle track for active play and motor development


Wayne RESA is proud to open our Early Childhood Center to expand the Great Start Readiness Program in Wayne County 

  • Our center will serve as a model PreK program with an innovative educator training lab to support our teacher apprentice program.
  • We join the 173 established Great Start Readiness Program providers across Wayne County, collectively serving more than 10,900 4‑year‑olds.
  • Wayne RESA continues to support all Great Start Readiness Program providers in Wayne County. We are excited to enroll our first classrooms at our Early Childhood Center while continuing to support our neighboring Great Start Readiness Program providers.

Frequently Asked Questions

All 4-year-olds who are residents of Michigan are eligible for Great Start Readiness Program PreK. Your child may live in a different county than where you enroll. All income levels are welcome. We welcome all families.

Children who turn 4-years-old between September 2 and December 1, 2026, can apply now, but will be on a waitlist until September 2, 2026.

Children who are 4-years-old now are priority for enrollment until September 1, 2026. We encourage all families with 4-year-olds or soon-to-be 4-year-olds to apply now.

Our Innovative Educator Training Lab is:

  • Designed to function as both a high-quality early learning environment and a teacher pipeline hub
  • Supports professional development, clinical learning, and continuous improvement for aspiring early childhood professionals
  • Hosts student teacher observations and apprentice teachers as part of grow-your-own pathways
  • In partnership with Michigan Educator Workforce Initiative (MEWI) and Talent Together to support staff preparation, teacher apprenticeship, and educator pipeline efforts
  • Has purpose-built mirrored glass observation spaces that allow teacher candidates and educators to observe effective practice in real time without disrupting instruction

Daily Routines

Arrival – 9:00am

Teacher Planning & Prep

Teachers prepare small group activities, group meeting materials, books, and supplies for the day.

9:00 – 9:45

Arrival, Greeting & Breakfast

Greet each family and child as they arrive. Help children use the restroom, wash hands, and respond to questions of the day and sign in. Teachers eat with children during family-style breakfast.

9:45 – 10:00

Group Meeting

Give a signal to gather the group together. Start with a welcome song, discuss attendance, review the question of the day, and conduct a large group activity and share good news.

10:00 – 11:20

Planning, Choice, Clean‑up, Recall

Children always initiate activities and carry out their own intentions. Adults play with and encourage problem solving with materials during social conflict.

11:20 – 11:40

Small Group

Introduce new concepts or reinforce skills children are developing. Encourage conversation and the sharing of ideas. Ask questions, pose new challenges, and document what children know and can do.

11:40 – 11:50

Small Group Read Aloud #1

Children and teachers participate in Essential Reading: Interactive Read Aloud.

11:50 – 12:30

Outdoor Prep / Outdoor

Observe and interact with children, lead activities, or assist games and movement activities that promote large muscle development.

12:30 – 1:15

Lunch / Lunch Prep

Family-style: children serve themselves, choose whether to eat and what to eat. Adults sample the food and support conversation. Children assist with cleaning up and setting up cots.

1:15 – 2:30

Rest Time / Wake Up

Help children rest and get comfortable. Supervise the rest period at all times. Sleeping or quiet, solitary, or your-own-choice play. Includes time for preparation.

2:30 – 2:45

Snack Time

Family-style: children serve themselves, choose whether to eat and what to eat. Adults sample the food and support conversation. Children assist with cleaning up.
